KMC launches ‘Silver Volunteer Programme’ for citizens above 45

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has introduced a ‘Silver Volunteer Programme’ aimed at engaging experienced citizens aged above 45 in various developmental and social initiatives of the metropolis.

According to Bibek Bastola, member of the secretariat of the Urban Planning Commission under KMC, the programme seeks to utilize the skills and experience of retired or semi-retired individuals who wish to contribute to society rather than remain idle after retirement.

“Are you over 45 years old? Have you retired from a job or business? If you wish to contribute to society rather than just rest after retirement, come and join hands in the development of the metropolis,” Bastola said, describing the spirit of the initiative.

The programme allows volunteers to collaborate with KMC in diverse areas such as education, health, sanitation, environment, administration, urban development, and heritage conservation.

As per the ‘KMC Silver Volunteer Procedure’, Nepali citizens, non-resident Nepalis, and foreign nationals between 45 and 74 years old can apply online. Applicants must have at least 20 years of experience in any sector—government, private, or non-governmental—and possess relevant expertise.

Participants are expected to contribute a minimum of five hours of service per week for one year. They must also meet conditions such as having no criminal record and not being disqualified under existing laws.

According to KMC, the initiative aims to channel the experience of mature citizens into nation-building efforts while offering them personal fulfillment through meaningful social engagement.
