Online media registration shifted back to Department of Information



KATHMANDU: Online news portals in Nepal can once again be registered directly through the Department of Information, following a Cabinet decision on Thursday.

Government spokesperson and Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Jagadish Kharel, announced the move after the interim government’s Council of Ministers meeting at Singha Durbar.

“Online registration and renewal will no longer require going through district administration offices. It can now be done directly at the Department of Information,” Minister Kharel said.

The previous KP Sharma Oli-led government had changed the process in July, requiring online media outlets to register through district administration offices. That decision was implemented by amending the Press and Publications Act, 1991, adding provisions that shifted the responsibility away from the Department of Information.

The latest Cabinet decision effectively reverses that arrangement, centralizing registration and renewal back to the Department.
