Nepal calls for international solidarity to address climate crisis

HENAN: Deputy Speaker Indira Rana, has called for urgent international solidarity to ensure climate justice for countries like Nepal that are facing the severe and disproportionate impacts of climate change.

Speaking at a forum organized by the Shanghai Cooperation Forum in Henan Province, China, on Friday, Deputy Speaker Rana said Nepal, as a mountainous and climate-vulnerable country, is on the frontlines of the climate crisis despite contributing very little to its causes.

“Mountains are losing snow cover. Citizens of mountainous and rural areas are directly affected by the impacts of climate change,” she said. “We need international solidarity immediately to lessen such impacts, promote green energy, and ensure climate justice.”

Rana said while Nepal did not create this crisis, it is committed to being part of the solution. She underscored that platforms like the Shanghai Cooperation Forum are crucial in tackling shared global challenges such as climate change, inequality, and regional tension.

“Nepal has been working to uplift people from poverty while protecting the environment. Only sustainable, balanced, and inclusive development can strengthen our economy,” she said.

Highlighting Nepal’s peaceful transition from conflict to democracy, she stated that the country has always prioritized cooperation over competition in its international relations.

Rana also reiterated Nepal’s commitment to deepening ties with China and neighboring countries through enhanced infrastructure development, stronger trade relations, and people-to-people connections.

“Nepal values its strong and historic relationship with China based on mutual respect and cooperation,” she added.
