Widespread rain likely across hilly regions today

KATHMANDU: As monsoon conditions persist across Nepal, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has forecast widespread rainfall throughout the day.

The Weather Forecasting Division stated that hilly and mountainous regions, particularly in Koshi and Sudurpaschim provinces, are likely to receive significant precipitation, with some areas facing the possibility of very heavy rainfall.

This afternoon, light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning is expected in some hilly areas of the country, including parts of Sudurpaschim Province, while a few places in other provinces may also see showers.

There is a chance of heavy to very heavy rainfall in one or two places within Koshi and Sudurpaschim Provinces. Additionally, light to moderate rain or snowfall is likely in a few areas of the high hills and mountainous regions across all provinces.

Later tonight, rainfall activity is expected to continue. Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning may occur in many of the remaining hilly areas, including Koshi, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and in a few places elsewhere.

One or two areas in Koshi, Gandaki, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Light to moderate rain or snowfall is forecast in some high hilly and mountainous regions of all provinces.

Meteorologists classify rainfall based on intensity: light rainfall refers to less than 10 millimeters in a 24-hour period, moderate rainfall ranges from 10 to 50 millimeters, heavy rainfall from 50 to 100 millimeters, very heavy rainfall from 100 to 200 millimeters, and anything above 200 millimeters is considered extremely heavy.

The forecast also uses spatial terminology to describe coverage: rainfall in one or two places indicates less than 10 percent of a given area is expected to receive precipitation.

If rain is expected in 10 to 30 percent of an area, it is termed “a few places.” “Some places” refers to a 30 to 50 percent likelihood, “many places” means 50 to 80 percent, and if more than 80 percent of an area is expected to receive rain, it is referred to as “most places.”

The Division has advised residents, especially those in flood- and landslide-prone zones, to remain cautious, as weather conditions may intensify throughout the day.
