Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP): SC order on Rabi Lamichhane’s habeas corpus petition procedurally flawed

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has concluded that the Supreme Court’s ruling on Rabi Lamichhane’s ‘habeas corpus’ petition contained procedural flaws, though the party stated it accepts the legal authority of the decision.

Following a central committee meeting held at the party’s Banasthali office on Sunday, acting spokesperson Manish Jha said the party respects the Supreme Court’s order but believes there were “procedural errors and weaknesses” in its issuance. He indicated that the party plans to initiate a public debate on the matter.

Despite its criticisms, the RSP emphasized its continued respect for the judiciary and willingness to abide by the court’s decisions within the legal framework.

The meeting also discussed the recent corruption scandal in the Department of Immigration, arguing that it highlights the failings and contradictions within the current ruling coalition. Jha criticized what he described as a double standard, where opposition leaders are jailed without evidence, while leaders of established parties are only detained if wrongdoing is proven.

He added that the RSP might be forced to take to the streets to demand good governance and that the party is preparing for a strong presence in the upcoming parliamentary session on Tuesday, hinting that it “won’t be business as usual.”
