WFD warns of thunderstorms as rain shifts toward eastern regions

KATHMANDU: The Weather Forecasting Division (WFD) has issued a cautionary alert as the rain system currently active in western Nepal on Sunday morning is gradually moving northeast.

In a notice released on Sunday morning, the Division stated that light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning was occurring in isolated areas around Dadeldhura and Achham.

As the weather system is shifting northeastward, the public has been advised to take necessary precautions.

Meteorologists classify rainfall based on intensity: light rain refers to less than 10 millimeters in 24 hours, moderate rain ranges from 10 to 50 millimeters, heavy rain from 50 to 100 millimeters, very heavy rain from 100 to 200 millimeters, and extreme rainfall is over 200 millimeters.

Regarding coverage, “some places” refers to rainfall in about 50 percent of an area, “a few places” indicates 25 to 30 percent coverage, and “one or two places” means less than 25 percent of the area, the Division said.
