Two APF members remanded in custody in connection with Santoshi Mahat’s death

POKHARA: Two members of the Armed Police Force have been remanded in custody in connection with the death of Armed Police Inspector Santoshi Mahat, who was found dead at the Crowd and Riot Management Training School in Lamapatan, Pokhara.

Armed Police Inspector Bibek Joshi and Constable Resham Bahadur Shahi have been charged with abetting suicide. The Kaski District Court issued the remand order on Monday, following an investigation into Mahat’s death on February 22.

Mahat was discovered dead in the training school premises, sparking suspicions raised by her family, who filed a complaint with the District Police Office on February 23.

The complaint suggested a relationship between Mahat and Inspector Joshi, and following the investigation, Inspector Joshi was arrested. Constable Shahi was taken into custody on March 19 as part of the ongoing inquiry. The police submitted a report to the District Government Attorney’s Office on March 21, which then filed a charge sheet on March 22, leading to the court’s order for their remand.

According to the Criminal Code, those found guilty of abetting suicide could face up to 5 years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 50,000.

The Armed Police Force Headquarters has set up a special investigation committee led by DIG Laxman Singh to probe the incident further. Mahat, who joined the Armed Police in 2015, had recently been promoted to Inspector after advancing from Assistant Sub-Inspector in 2021.
