20 injured in Nawalparasi clash over love affair dispute



NAWALPARASI: A violent clash erupted in Palhinandan Rural Municipality-3, Belaspur, Nawalparasi, leaving 20 people injured after a dispute over a love affair escalated.

One person sustained serious injuries, and an angry mob set a police vehicle and a horse-drawn carriage godown on fire.

The conflict began when a couple involved in a love affair had a dispute, leading to an altercation at the boy’s brother, Sobrat Pawariya’s residence. Tensions escalated after Sobrat and others allegedly assaulted the boy when he visited Belaspur.

The following morning, the boy’s relatives confronted Sobrat’s family, leading to stone-throwing between the two sides.

During the clash, the godown was set ablaze by the boy’s group. The situation worsened when two people were injured while fleeing the scene, struck by a vehicle in the chaos.

Among the injured, Vijay Dhawal and 45-year-old Baijnath Prasad Lonia, both from the boy’s side, are in critical condition and are receiving treatment at Bhairahawa City Hospital.

The violence intensified when the crowd torched a vehicle belonging to the Area Police Office in Maheshpur. In response, police fired five rounds of tear gas and three rounds of aerial shots to bring the situation under control.

Police Inspector Narayan Thapa, Information Officer at the District Police Office, reported that three civilians, 11 Nepal Police officers, including an inspector, and four Armed Police personnel were injured during the clash.

Five people, including four women, have been arrested for their involvement in the arson. According to the police, the situation is now under control, and an investigation is ongoing.
