President issues ordinance amending Voter List Act ahead of March 5 election
President Ram Chandra Paudel has issued an ordinance to amend the Voter List Act, in preparation for the upcoming House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, 2026. According to the Office of the President, the ordinance was issued on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, in line with Article 114 (1) of the Constitution.
President and PM discuss election preparations and security
President Ram Chandra Paudel and interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki held talks at Sheetal Niwas on Tuesday. According to the President’s Secretariat, the meeting focused on the current political situation, preparations for the House of Representatives elections scheduled for March 5, and the overall security environment.
Finance Ministry cuts routine meeting and housing allowances for public officials
The Ministry of Finance has announced that officials and employees of public bodies will no longer receive meeting allowances for routine work. The decision, issued via a press release on Tuesday, aims to curb unnecessary government expenditure. However, the ministry clarified that allowances may still be provided for committee meetings formed under law that occur outside regular office hours.
Govt cancels personal secretary benefits for most political officials
The Ministry of Finance announced on Tuesday that the personal secretary facilities previously provided by the state will be withdrawn for most political officials. The decision exempts the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Speaker of the House, Chairperson of the National Assembly, provincial chiefs, and ministers of the federal and provincial governments.
23 Congress leaders defend Deuba, propose constitution amendment through parliament reinstatement
Twenty-three leaders of the Nepali Congress have come forward in defense of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba. The joint statement was released on Wednesday, two days after leader Guru Ghimire and others demanded a special general convention. The signatories include central members, chief ministers, National Assembly members, acting provincial presidents, provincial ministers, district presidents, provincial assembly members, and other office bearers.
Baburam Bhattarai resigns as chair of Naya Shakti Party
Former Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai has stepped down as chairperson of Nepal Samajbadi Party (Naya Shakti). According to party spokesperson Krishna Sharma, Bhattarai submitted his resignation proposal during the party’s special expanded central committee meeting held at Deepjyoti Banquet, Boudha, on Wednesday. The central committee approved his proposal.
Gen-Z movement sparks tensions in civil service as trade unions push back
Political party-affiliated trade unions within Nepal’s civil service have stepped up after a fresh attempt to inject the Gen-Z protest movement into the bureaucracy triggered tensions. The controversy began when some civil servants, under the banner of a new “Gen-Z Civil Service Assembly,” demanded the resignation or dismissal of Chief Secretary Ek Narayan Aryal, several secretaries, and senior officials of the Supreme Court and Federal Parliament Secretariat.
Landslide at Twin Khola disrupts Pokhara–Kathmandu transport
The landslide at Twin Khola along the Muglin–Narayangadh section has also affected the Pokhara–Kathmandu route. With heavy vehicle pressure building up on the Muglin stretch due to the blockage, transport services on the Prithvi Highway are facing delays, said Ain Kumar Shahi, Chairperson of the Prithvi Highway Bus Operators Company Limited.
Minister Ghising meets Chinese Ambassador to boost infrastructure and energy ties

Lalitpur DAO sets special traffic arrangements for festive season
Ahead of the upcoming festive season, the Lalitpur District Administration has announced special traffic arrangements for public and private vehicles traveling along Kanti Lokpath toward Makwanpur–Sindhuli. The arrangements will be in effect from September 23 to October 7, aiming to manage heavy traffic and ensure smooth movement during the busy period.
Finance Minister rules out scrapping provinces
Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has made it clear that there is no possibility of dismantling Nepal’s provincial structure. Speaking briefly with journalists at Biratnagar Airport, Khanal, who is also overseeing the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, said the current government is operating strictly under the constitution and has no plans to abolish provinces.
Garlands and khadas mark Oli’s return to Gundu amid ongoing grief
The government led by KP Sharma Oli, which had come close to securing a two-thirds majority, collapsed on September 9 following two days of Gen-Z protests. Less than three weeks since his exit, Oli has now resurfaced in Gundu, Bhaktapur. Oli, who spent 10 days in a military barracks after leaving office, moved into a residence in Gundu on September 18, arranged by CPN-UML politburo member Mahesh Basnet. Since then, Basnet has mobilized large groups of youth and supporters around Oli.
Festival lull drags NEPSE down 27.89 points
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index fell by 27.89 points (1.03 percent) on Wednesday, closing at 2,654.35 points. Market turnover also dropped significantly. Compared to Tuesday’s Rs 5.29 billion, total transactions fell to Rs 4.12 billion. Analysts say the approaching Dashain festival has dampened trading activity, with sellers hesitant since payouts will not be settled before the holidays, while buyers are conserving cash for festival expenses.
Deuba couple discharged from hospital, to relocate to Lalitpur after attack
Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba and his wife, Arzu Rana Deuba, have been discharged from hospital and will temporarily move to Lalitpur following attack on their Budhanilkantha residence during the Gen-Z protest. The couple was injured on September 9 when a radical faction of Gen-Z protesters stormed their residence, assaulting them with blunt objects and sharp weapons. Deuba sustained a serious neck injury requiring 12 stitches, while Rana also suffered injuries during the assault.
RSP website hacked
The hacker group ‘Gen-Z Rising Nepal’ has reportedly breached the website of the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), led by Rabi Lamichhane. The group used an SQL injection attack to post their message within the party’s ‘Press Release’ section.
Nepali Congress withdraws support from Madhesh Province government
The Nepali Congress (NC) has formally withdrawn its support from the Madhesh Province government, a decision announced after a parliamentary party meeting on Wednesday at the provincial party office. The party also decided to recall its ministers from the provincial cabinet. NC Parliamentary Party leader and provincial president Krishna Prasad Yadav stated that the party’s support is institution-based rather than personal, and in light of recent developments, particularly the Janmat Party’s move to sit on the opposition benches, they have decided to retract their backing of the government.
Govt plans staff realignment to improve services in overburdened agencies
The government has clarified that it is undertaking a realignment of staff positions in agencies facing heavy workloads to ensure effective service delivery. The decision, initially made at a secretary’s meeting on September 16, had caused some confusion. The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) stated that additional positions will be provided to agencies struggling with workload pressures.
Gen-Z protests: Insurance claims reach Rs 22.25 billion
Insurance claims related to damages caused during the Gen Z movement have reached Rs 22.25 billion, according to the Nepal Insurance Authority. Bagmati Province recorded the highest number of claims, amounting to Rs 17.97 billion. A total of 2,478 claims have been submitted across 18 insurance companies, including micro-insurance providers. The Authority noted that the number of claims may rise further, given the extensive damage to private property. Notably, all claims have been filed by private sector entities, as government-owned structures were not insured.
Gold hits new record, silver also continues to surge
Gold prices in the Nepali market set a new record on Wednesday, with gold reaching Rs 223,000 per tola. This follows Tuesday’s previous high of Rs 221,700 per tola.
