Finance Minister rules out scrapping provinces

BIRATNAGAR: Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal has made it clear that there is no possibility of dismantling Nepal’s provincial structure.

Speaking briefly with journalists at Biratnagar Airport, Khanal, who is also overseeing the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration, said the current government is operating strictly under the constitution and has no plans to abolish provinces.

Responding to queries, Minister Khanal also dismissed speculation about a potential ban on Rs 1,000 and Rs 500 banknotes, saying the matter has not been discussed at any level.

On India’s recent reduction of the unified Goods and Services Tax (GST), he said the government is studying the implications. He assured that if any domestic industries or enterprises face negative impacts, corrective measures will be taken.
