KATHMANDU: The government has imposed restrictions on the purchase of luxury and expensive items as part of its ongoing cost-cutting measures. Finance Minister Rameshwor Khanal announced the move to curb non-essential spending across government offices.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Finance on Wednesday, the Cabinet, in its meeting held on September 22, decided to prohibit the purchase of costly electronics and luxury items in all subordinate offices.
The directive also bans distribution-oriented programs involving gas, bicycles, health insurance fees, electricity charges, hand pumps, sarees, and other similar items. The Ministry has issued official letters to all ministries, government bodies, provincial authorities, and local levels to ensure the implementation of this decision.
The Ministry stated that the Cabinet’s recent decisions aim to prioritize public infrastructure reconstruction and maintenance, ensure the continuity of essential public services, manage election expenses, support economic recovery and relief efforts, and reduce unproductive expenditures to promote fiscal prudence.
