20-year afforestation campaign announced

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Forests and Environment has announced a 20-year nationwide tree plantation campaign titled the Sagarmatha Plantation Mega Campaign.

The initiative comes as a follow-up to the Sagarmatha Sambaad held in Kathmandu from May 16 to 18.

The campaign will run annually from July to August, beginning this year on National Tree Plantation Day June 28.

The government plans to plant trees on suitable land across the country while ensuring proper protection and care of the saplings.

Minister for Forests and Environment Ain Bahadur Shahi Thakuri said the campaign is part of Nepal’s broader effort to protect the Himalayas, which are facing severe climate impacts, including melting glaciers that threaten downstream regions.

This initiative aligns with Nepal’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045, with the tree-planting campaign expected to play a key role in reaching that goal.

The ministry has urged all federal and provincial ministries, local governments, community and private forest groups, civil society, the private sector, and media to actively participate and promote the campaign.

Named after Mount Everest (Sagarmatha), the campaign symbolizes Nepal’s leadership in climate resilience and Himalayan conservation.
