Farmers in Bhaktapur busy harvesting wheat (Photos)

KATHMANDU: Wheat, Nepal’s third major food crop after rice and maize, is currently being harvested by farmers in Bhaktapur.

Despite the shrinking availability of farmland in the Kathmandu Valley due to growing urbanization and housing development, farmers are actively harvesting wheat in the remaining cultivable areas.

Wheat, typically sown after the rice harvest in the Nepali months of Kartik to Mangsir, is usually harvested around Jestha. It serves as a key source of calories and protein and is cultivated across various regions of Nepal, from the Terai plains to the hilly areas.

In the fiscal year 2079/80, wheat was cultivated on 716,978 hectares of land in Nepal, producing 2,144,568 metric tons. The current national wheat productivity stands at 2.99 metric tons per hectare.
