Purna Bahadur Tamang dismissed over ‘governor deal’, claims Mahesh Basnet

KATHMANDU: UML leader Mahesh Basnet has alleged that Minister of State for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Purna Bahadur Tamang was dismissed after evidence emerged of a financial deal surrounding the appointment of the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank.

Taking to social media on Thursday, a day after Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli relieved Tamang of his duties, Basnet claimed that a deal worth Rs 200 million had been struck for the central bank governor’s post.

“What is even more dangerous is that the Prime Minister dismissed him after evidence of a Rs 200 million deal was found for the appointment of the governor of Nepal Rastra Bank,” Basnet wrote. “Now, he is making unnecessary accusations against the Prime Minister in the media after losing his post under a political pretext.”

Basnet also accused Tamang, a leader from the Nepali Congress and president of the party’s Ramechhap branch, of involvement in multiple irregularities.

He alleged that over 20 development schemes linked to Tamang had been blacklisted and that he had manipulated contracts under the guise of his state ministerial role.

“He pretends to protect Kulman [Ghising, NEA Managing Director] while colluding with him to commit irregularities in contracts worth billions,” Basnet further alleged.
