Heatwave alert issued for Tarai as temperatures soar across Nepal

KATHMANDU: The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a heatwave alert for parts of the Tarai region, warning of soaring temperatures in Lumbini Province and extreme heat conditions in other southern plains.

According to the department, residents in the Tarai areas of Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim Provinces should brace for intense heat over the coming days. A heatwave is specifically forecast for the Terai belt of Lumbini Province.

Kathmandu Valley is also experiencing rising temperatures, with today’s maximum expected to reach between 31 and 33 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile, hilly areas in Koshi, Gandaki, and Karnali Provinces may see partly cloudy skies, with chances of light rain, thunder, or lightning in isolated places. High hilly and mountainous areas could experience light snowfall.

Authorities have advised the public, especially in the affected Terai regions, to take precautions against heat-related illnesses, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours.
