Economic Digest: Nepal’s Business News in a Snap

KATHMANDU: Economic Digest offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of significant business happenings in Nepal, presented in easily digestible summaries.

Nepal’s current economic and governance landscape reflects a mix of market volatility, structural reform efforts, and institutional development amid growing fiscal pressures.

The Nepal Stock Exchange has seen four consecutive days of decline, echoing investor caution, while a sharp drop in gold prices signals instability in commodity markets influenced by both global and domestic factors.

The World Bank’s lowered growth forecast to 4.5% for FY 2024/25 underscores deeper vulnerabilities in Nepal’s financial and infrastructural resilience, exacerbated by climate-related disasters.

Meanwhile, the government is taking proactive steps, including launching a large-scale infrastructure fund, enforcing price transparency in retail sectors, and introducing budget planning reforms in provinces like Gandaki and Lumbini.

However, challenges remain, such as rising agricultural insurance subsidies straining public funds, Nepal’s staggering trade deficit with China (99.1%), and concerns over food safety due to pesticide residues in vegetables.

The fiscal and legislative calendar is intensifying, with Parliament preparing for key budget and policy discussions starting in early May, aiming to address governance gaps, stimulate investment, and restore public trust amid a complex socio-economic environment.

World Bank lowers Nepal’s growth forecast to 4.5% for FY 2024/25

The World Bank has revised Nepal’s economic growth projection for fiscal year 2024/25 (2081/82 BS) to 4.5%, down from earlier estimates.

The latest South Asia Development Update 2025, titled Taxing Times, attributes the downgrade to structural financial fragilities and the impact of natural disasters like floods and landslides.

These disruptions have weakened productivity and infrastructure, particularly affecting agriculture and tourism. The report anticipates only a modest recovery in the following fiscal year, forecasting 5.2% growth for FY 2025/26 (2082/83 BS).

Rising subsidies for agricultural insurance strain govt budget

The government’s policy of subsidizing 80% of premiums for agricultural and livestock insurance has begun to pose fiscal challenges. Delays in subsidy disbursement have caused insurers to temporarily halt issuing new policies.

In FY 2080/81, Rs 1.61 billion was allocated in subsidies to support 156,121 policies, covering assets valued at Rs 42.13 billion. This generated premiums worth Rs 2.02 billion.
