KATHMANDU: The government is set to proceed with the formation of a recommendation committee for investigating enforced disappearances and establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), following an agreement reached between the top leaders of the three major political parties.
After a meeting at Singha Durbar, UML leader and former Law Minister Agni Kharel confirmed that the process would move forward in line with discussions held between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and leaders from both the Nepali Congress and the Maoist Center.
The recommendation committee will be tasked with appointing the chairpersons and members of both commissions, as outlined in Sub-section 3 of Section 3 of the Investigation of Disappeared Persons and Truth and Reconciliation Commission 2014.
Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, who also participated in the discussions, added that the agreement among the party leaders would ensure the swift formation of the recommendation committee, which would take the transitional justice process forward.
The meeting also reviewed the remaining tasks of the peace process, including the formation of both commissions. Kharel noted that a previous search committee had already submitted a report, which was part of the ongoing discussions. The parties emphasized continuing the tradition of building consensus to move the issue forward.
UML Chair and Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba, and Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal were present at the meeting.
Also in attendance were senior leaders from the parties, including Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, Shakti Basnet, and Khimlal Devkota from the Maoist Center.
Before the discussions, Dahal met President Ram Chandra Paudel at Sheetal Niwas to brief him on the ongoing developments.
