Finance Ministry responds to concerns over suspension of USAID programs

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Finance has responded to media reports and social media discussions regarding the suspension of programs run by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) in Nepal.

The Ministry clarified that four programs related to education, health, agriculture, and statistics, which were being implemented through the Government of Nepal’s budget system, have been suspended for 90 days following an executive order issued by the US President on January 20, 2025.

In addition, three programs—Biodiversity, Provincial and Local Governance Strengthening Program, and Climate Resilient Municipal Services Program—are currently in the design phase.

According to the Ministry, these programs have also been halted by the executive order, and no financial assistance has been received as the agreements for these projects are yet to be signed.

The Ministry highlighted the longstanding relationship between Nepal and the United States, emphasizing that the US has been providing continuous support for Nepal’s economic, social, and infrastructure development through USAID since 1951.
