JHAPA: Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has stated that fully implementing the current constitution is the key to addressing identity issues in Nepal.
Speaking at a gathering of martyr families and indigenous leaders at Kachankawal Rural Municipality-3, Jhapa, as part of the Maoist Tarai Madhes Awareness Campaign, Prachanda emphasized that concepts like autonomous regions, special regions, and protected areas outlined in the constitution can significantly address identity concerns.
Prachanda argued that implementing the constitution should be the first step in addressing the identity needs of various communities, including Koch and Sherpa. He added that if these issues remain unresolved, constitutional amendments could be considered.
He acknowledged that the party was previously unable to advance important agendas, including identity, due to the priority of drafting the constitution. However, he stressed that the party is now committed to prioritizing the issues of oppressed classes and communities.
Dahal highlighted that the party has launched a campaign to reconnect with its traditional support base.
During the event, indigenous community leaders urged the Maoist leadership, including Prachanda, to strengthen their commitment to identity issues, incorporate them into the election manifesto, and take the lead in representing indigenous communities.
Kachankawal in Jhapa is home to various indigenous communities, including Rajbanshi, Gangai, Majhi, and Muslims.
