Gen-Z protest probe panel summons Ramesh Lekhak for statement

KATHMANDU: The investigation commission formed to study the human and material losses during the Gen-Z movement protests on September 8 and 9 has summoned former Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to record his statement.

The commission, which recently received a one-month extension to complete its investigation, has called Lekhak to seek information within seven days regarding the crackdown carried out on September 8. At the time, Lekhak was serving as the Home Minister.

During the protests on September 8, a total of 19 people lost their lives,17 outside the Parliament building in Kathmandu and two in Itahari, Sunsari. The following day, violent demonstrations resulted in widespread damage to public and private property.

According to the commission, a total of 76 people were killed during the two-day protests. The commission has not yet summoned then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. Officials said Oli will be called only after former Home Minister Lekhak records his statement.

However, Oli has publicly stated that he is ready to face bullets but will not appear before the commission. The CPN-UML has labeled the Gauri Bahadur Karki-led commission unconstitutional and controversial, demanding its dissolution.
