Supreme Court orders release of Durga Prasai

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has ordered the release of Durga Prasai, coordinator of the Rashtra, Rashtriyata, Dharma, Sanskriti Nagarik Bachau Mahaabhiyan.

A division bench of Justices Nahakul Subedi and Shreekant Paudel issued the order on Sunday while hearing a habeas corpus petition filed at the court.

Earlier on Thursday, the Supreme Court had directed authorities to present Prasai before the court within 24 hours along with reasons for his detention. Justice Meghraj Pokharel’s bench had instructed the authorities to submit the basis and grounds for holding the medical entrepreneur in custody.

Prasai’s son, Nirajan Prasai, had filed the habeas corpus petition at the Supreme Court, claiming that his father was being unlawfully detained.

Durga Prasai had been taken into custody by Kathmandu District Police on charges of disturbing public order through provocative statements. Police arrested him late Monday night from his residence in Thimi, Bhaktapur, citing concerns that his inflammatory remarks could disrupt peace. His security aide, Deepak Khadka, is also being held in custody.
