Kathmandu police arrest five gang members, 18 others in ‘Operation Safety’



KATHMANDU: Kathmandu Police have arrested five alleged gang members and 18 others accused of harassing passengers at the airport during a special operation conducted across the Valley on Friday night.

According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Pawan Bhattarai, spokesperson for the District Police Office Kathmandu, the arrests were made as part of ‘Operation Safety Kathmandu’.

Police arrested Praveen Tamang, also known as ‘Dimple’, for his alleged involvement in gang activities associated with the Shyam Lama group in the Boudha area.

Similarly, Birju Maharjan, accused of engaging in gang activities in the Kalanki–Bafal area, Sujan Karki, reportedly involved in gang activities around the Kalanki bus ticket counter and petrol pump area, Saru Humagain, linked to gang activities in Syuchatar, and Biki Lama, accused of involvement in loot and gang-related incidents in Boudha, were also taken into custody.

Meanwhile, police also detained 18 individuals accused of troubling passengers at Tribhuvan International Airport. According to SP Bhattarai, they were allegedly taking passengers to specific hotels and receiving commissions from both passengers and hotels.

Police said ten of those detained were found directly involved in collecting commissions from passengers and misbehaving with them. Investigations into the cases are ongoing.
