Chitwan National Park tightens security ahead of festivals

KATHMANDU: Chitwan National Park has stepped up security measures ahead of the festive season to prevent potential theft and poaching.

As the number of visitors returning from overseas or other districts increases during the holidays, the park faces added security challenges. Authorities have heightened vigilance to counter any plans by smugglers during this period.

According to Avinash Thapa Magar, the park’s information officer, 32 CCTV cameras within the park have been repaired and are now operational. “Security arrangements have been strengthened to control potential thefts and poaching during the festive season,” he said.

For festival-specific security, the park will deploy patrols on elephants, on foot, and over short and long distances. A total of 57 security posts within the park have been activated. “Checkposts and local residents have been urged to remain alert,” Magar added.

Community-level wildlife conservation clubs have also been mobilized to raise awareness. Spread across an area of 952.63 square kilometers, the park experiences increased visits from smugglers every year during festivals, prompting authorities to maintain heightened vigilance this year.
