Six cases of chikungunya reported in Chitwan

KATHMANDU: Health authorities in Chitwan have confirmed six cases of chikungunya among patients visiting various hospitals in the district.

All cases were detected since the beginning of the current fiscal year.

According to the District Public Health Office, three of the infected individuals are from Bharatpur Metropolitan City, two from Khairahani Municipality, and one from Rapti Municipality.

The infected patients are aged 34 to 44, said office chief Dinesh Rupakheti. He added that most of them contracted the disease after returning from employment abroad or other districts within Nepal.

“Four of the patients returned from India, one from South Korea, and one from Sunsari,” Rupakheti confirmed.

Last fiscal year, 10 cases of chikungunya were reported in the district. The office noted that in the past four years, there had been no local transmission among residents.

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral disease transmitted by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
