Cholera outbreak reported in Birgunj

BIRGUNJ: Cholera cases have been detected in Birgunj Metropolitan City-12, Murli New Tole, raising fears of a wider outbreak.

Health authorities confirmed that three people, a 16-year-old boy, a 24-year-old man, and a 24-year-old woman, tested positive for cholera bacteria after more than 30 residents were admitted to Terai Hospital on Friday with severe diarrhea. Officials said the teenager’s condition is serious.

Birgunj Metropolitan Mayor Rajeshman Singh said health workers were immediately mobilized to the affected area. “Cholera is a highly contagious disease. We request everyone to remain vigilant and follow precautions,” Singh said.

Teams from the metropolitan health division and the Parsa Health Office have been visiting households in Murli since Friday night to spread awareness about hygiene and safe water. Drinking water samples have been sent to Kathmandu’s Teku laboratory for detailed testing.

Public Health Officer Jaymod Thakur noted that this is the first outbreak of cholera in Birgunj in the past 10 years. “The situation requires close monitoring and quick action,” he warned.

Narayani Hospital spokesperson Dr. Uday Narayan Singh added that several patients with severe diarrhea are being treated in the emergency ward, heightening concerns about further infections.

Authorities have urged residents to boil or chlorinate drinking water, wash hands with soap, and seek immediate treatment if symptoms like watery diarrhea, vomiting, or dehydration occur.

Officials said rapid response mechanisms are in place to prevent the disease from spreading beyond Murli, but stressed that public cooperation is critical to contain the outbreak.
