90% population to have access to drinking water by 2030: Pradeep Yadav

KATHMANDU:  Minister for Water Supply, Pradeep Yadav, announced on Monday that the government is committed to ensuring 90 percent of the population has access to safe drinking water by 2030.

Responding to queries raised during the ongoing budget debate in the House of Representatives, Yadav outlined the government’s plan to maximize available resources to achieve this target.

Dismissing accusations of budgetary discrimination in the water sector, the minister said his ministry is working toward equitable access to clean water across the country in coordination with federal, provincial, and local governments.

However, he acknowledged a shortage of funds remains a challenge in expanding reliable distribution networks.

Yadav also raised concerns about the Department of National Parks’ restrictions on laying pipelines from the Bagmati River inside Shivapuri National Park, which he said hampers efforts to ensure year-round water supply to Kathmandu.

He questioned why private entities face no such obstacles.
