Purna Bahadur Tamang says next in line for dismissal is PM Oli

KATHMANDU: Following his dismissal from the post of Minister of State for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation on Wednesday, Purna Bahadur Tamang warned that Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli will be the next to be removed from office.

“We will now work towards removing KP Oli from the post of Prime Minister. He won’t remain Prime Minister forever,” said Tamang, who also serves as the Ramechhap District President of the Nepali Congress. “Just as he dismissed me, his time will come too. I’ll actively pursue this campaign.”

Before his dismissal, Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak had reportedly urged Tamang to resign, citing the prime minister’s directive.

Tamang, however, refused, saying, “I wasn’t appointed by Oli or the UML, so why should I resign just because they said so?”

Tamang added that he would have resigned had the request come from acting party president, in the absence of party president Sher Bahadur Deuba, who is currently abroad for medical treatment.

He also claimed his removal was linked to his public support for Kulman Ghising, Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority. “I opposed the decision to remove Ghising and voiced my dissatisfaction, arguing that someone doing good work shouldn’t be dismissed. I stand by that,” Tamang said.

Tamang further explained that during a Cabinet meeting on Chaitra 28, he had clashed with Prime Minister Oli over budget discussions.

Oli had proposed a minimum threshold of NPR 30 million for budget allocations, which Tamang opposed, arguing that budget distribution should reflect the country’s geography and soil conditions. “He may have seen my objection as a challenge,” Tamang noted.
