UML assures Education Bill passage by mid-May, urges teachers to end protests

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Chief Whip Mahesh Bartaula has assured that the Education Bill will be passed in Parliament by the end of Baisakh (mid-May).

Speaking to the media following a meeting between the party’s chief whips and whips with Speaker Devraj Ghimire on Wednesday, Bartaula stated that the demands of the teachers would be addressed during the upcoming budget session.

The government has scheduled the budget session for April 25. Bartaula urged teachers to end their ongoing protests, emphasizing their responsibility towards education and encouraging them to rejoin educational activities.

“We are working to reassure our teacher colleagues and acknowledge their concerns,” he said.

“They should view the efforts we are making positively and allow time for the regular legislative work, particularly the drafting of the bill, to proceed.”

Bartaula further clarified that the Education Bill will be passed, even if it requires halting other regular parliamentary proceedings.

He mentioned that the bill, currently under discussion in the education subcommittee, could take until the final week of April to be presented to Parliament after it completes the committee review.

“The teachers should reflect on their accountability to public education,” he added.

“It’s important for them to recognize their responsibility in this regard. The Parliament is committed to ensuring the government addresses their just demands, and the bill will be passed on time.”

Teachers have been protesting in Kathmandu for the past three weeks, raising various demands related to the Education Bill.
