KATHMANDU: Economic Digest offers a concise yet comprehensive overview of significant business happenings in Nepal, presented in easily digestible summaries.

Nepal’s current economic and policy landscape reflects a mixed picture of cautious optimism and structural challenges. The stock market experienced a downturn, with NEPSE dipping nearly 10 points and daily turnover falling, indicating weakened investor sentiment.

In contrast, the sharp rise in gold prices and the increase in foreign labor permits—nearly 800,000 issued this year—signal both economic insecurity and sustained reliance on remittance-driven growth.

Fiscal inefficiencies persist, as over Rs 5 billion in unspent budget was returned by ministries, while Bagmati Province utilized just 32.51% of its allocation in nine months.

At the same time, the government is mobilizing Rs 25.25 billion through Treasury bills and launching global audits of banks to meet IMF transparency standards.

Politically, Bhattarai’s unexplained resignation from the NRB Governor recommendation committee and continued industrial stagnation highlight governance and recovery hurdles.

Meanwhile, strategic developments—from EV import regulations and hydropower progress to international agreements on data protection and tourism booms in Everest—show forward momentum in select sectors, albeit amidst broader systemic inertia.
