Home Ministry sends letter to establish ‘Dalit Desk’ at Police Headquarters

KATHMANDU: The Ministry of Home Affairs has written a letter to establish a ‘Dalit Desk’ at the Police Headquarters to assist in the investigation and facilitation of cases related to discrimination, harassment, and untouchability against Dalits, along with the designation of a dedicated contact person.

Spokesperson for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Joint Secretary Ram Chandra Tiwari, confirmed that a letter has been sent to the Police Headquarters to set up the Dalit Desk and begin its operations.

Tiwari further stated that instructions have been issued to enhance the effectiveness of the Dalit Desks established in all 77 districts across the country.

“The circular has been issued to support the implementation of the law and promote good governance by establishing a Dalit Desk with the active participation of individuals from the Dalit community to address social evils such as caste discrimination,” Spokesperson Tiwari said.

“We have directed police personnel working at these desks to operate them in a more coordinated and effective manner.”

Recently, during a meeting with officials from the Joint Political Dalit Struggle Committee, who had met with Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak, the Minister had pledged to establish the Dalit Desk at the Police Headquarters to address issues of caste discrimination and untouchability.
