KATHMANDU: Martyr’s Week commenced today, honoring those who sacrificed their lives for the establishment of democracy in Nepal. Observed annually from January 23 to 29 (Magh 10 to 16), the event is organized in coordination with the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC).

On the opening day, Deputy Mayor Sunita Dangol, alongside other KMC officials and locals, paid homage to Shukraraj Shastri by laying wreaths at his statue in Teku, the site of his execution.

Shukraraj Shastri, born in Banaras in 1894, was a prominent figure in the campaign against autocratic rule, using religious activities to raise awareness. He was arrested in Indrachowk, Kathmandu, and later executed by the Rana government on 24 January 1941, at Kharibot in Teku.

The site of Shastri’s execution was preserved in 1979 by the then Kathmandu Nagar Panchayat, which erected an inscription in his honor.

Martyr’s Week serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made in the fight for democracy and provides an opportunity for the public to reflect on the values of freedom and justice.
