Consumer Protection Department fines two firms Rs 50,000 each for violating consumer law

KATHMANDU: The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection has fined two industries/firms Rs 50,000 each for failing to comply with provisions of the Consumer Protection Act, 2018.

According to the department, the action was taken after inspections found that the firms had not maintained mandatory price lists and registration documents at their business premises, as required by law.

The Consumer Protection Act, 2018 mandates that producers must display the factory price of each product, while sellers are required to keep and display wholesale or retail price lists for all goods being sold. The law also requires industry registration certificates and business registration or operating licenses to be displayed at sales outlets in a place clearly visible to the general public.

The department said Priya Sweet and Chat House, located at Maharajgunj in Kathmandu Metropolitan City–3, and I Café Restaurant and Bar, based in Tokha, were fined for not complying with these legal provisions.

In addition to the fines, the department carried out monitoring of 14 other firms and issued directive actions, instructing them to immediately correct identified shortcomings and adhere strictly to consumer protection regulations.

The Department of Commerce, Supply and Consumer Protection stated that it has intensified market monitoring in recent days. It said the inspections are aimed at maintaining a fair and transparent market, controlling black marketing, and preventing the sale and distribution of substandard or inedible goods.

The department has warned that further violations of consumer laws will invite stricter action, including higher fines and possible legal proceedings, and urged businesses to fully comply with existing regulations to protect consumer rights.
