Autopsy confirms Bipin Joshi was shot in the head

KATHMANDU: Nepali student Bipin Joshi was found to have died from a gunshot wound to the head, according to Israel’s Ambassador to Nepal, Shmulik Eri Bass.

Ambassador Bass said the National Forensic Science Institute of Israel confirmed that Joshi’s death resulted from a gunshot injury. “Until a few weeks ago, we had hoped Bipin was alive. But the latest forensic test has confirmed that he was shot in the head,” Bass said, claiming Joshi was killed while under Hamas captivity.

Joshi’s body was brought to Nepal from Israel on Monday after DNA verification and forensic procedures. Following cremation at Bhujelghat on the Mahakali River, Ambassador Bass met Bipin’s family in Malikarjun, Dhangadhi, and shared details of the autopsy report.

The official document signed by Dr. Binat Schwartz Milner of Israel’s National Forensic Science Institute lists the cause of death as “Gunshot wound of the head, terror attack.” The report also confirms that the remains were repatriated to Nepal through Israeli company Menucha La’ad Ltd.

According to those present at the cremation, the coffin returned from Israel contained Joshi’s skeletal remains rather than an intact body.

Bipin Joshi was among twelve Nepali students who were taken hostage during the Hamas attack in Gaza on October 7, 2023. The deaths of ten had already been confirmed earlier; with Joshi’s death verified, the total number of Nepali students killed in the attack has reached eleven.
