Lhende Khola Friendship Bridge nears completion under Chinese support

KATHMANDU: The reconstruction of the Lhendhe Khola Friendship Bridge, a key cross-border structure between Nepal and China, has reached its final stage. The Bailey bridge is being rebuilt with financial and technical assistance from the Chinese government.

Officials involved in the project said that installation of the necessary parts and the erection of pillars for the bridge have already been completed. The original motorable bridge at the site was swept away by floods in the Lhende Khola on July 8, prompting China to extend support for its reconstruction.

As the bridge’s end sections were being connected, the middle portion reportedly began to sag slightly. In response, Chinese technicians have started constructing an additional support pillar in the middle section of the river to strengthen the structure.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Rajesh Panthi, following a field inspection, said that given the pace of work, the bridge is expected to come into operation by November 1. However, he noted that the Chinese counterparts in the border area have not yet provided official confirmation regarding the bridge’s formal opening.

Chief Customs Officer Tulsi Prasad Bhattarai informed that preparations have been made to ensure swift customs clearance once the bridge is opened, as import of goods is expected to increase immediately after its operation.
