KATHMANDU: Mahabir Pun, founder of the National Innovation Center, has formally assumed office as Minister for Education, Science, and Technology.
He was appointed by the Cabinet led by Prime Minister Sushila Karki, in response to nationwide protests and the demands of youth.
Speaking after taking charge at Singha Durbar, Pun made it clear that he does not require government quarters or special facilities.
“I don’t need a government residence. When in Birgunj, I lived inside the agricultural tools factory; in Kathmandu, I stayed at the Innovation Center. Now, as a minister, all I need is a room, a chair, and a table inside the ministry. I cook for myself,” he said.
Pun has also declined personal security and vehicle facilities. He stated that he does not want security personnel from the army or police following him around in his daily life. “I don’t need protection. I’ve already told the army and police not to trail me when I go outside. At the ministry, they will, of course, be present,” he said.
He added that government vehicles would be used strictly for official purposes. “I’ll cook for myself. A bed and a kitchen are enough. For my personal work, I don’t need government cars or security,” he explained.
Highlighting his priorities, Pun stressed transparency and good governance in the education sector. “Gen-Z’s demand was to end corruption. We need good governance. If we see irregularities in the ministry, we will act,” he remarked.
He admitted that implementing free education would be challenging. “Money doesn’t come by digging up snow from the Himalayas. We have to find resources for free education,” he said.
Pun clarified that he did not take the ministerial position out of political ambition but due to public demand and pressure from the youth. “After six months, I will leave the position. There is no confusion about this,” he affirmed.
His straightforward announcement has been welcomed by the younger generation, who hope that his approach can bring reforms to the government system.
