Birgunj customs sees 20% surge in imports, exports triple in two months



KATHMANDU: Nepal’s busiest trade gateway, Birgunj customs, recorded a significant rise in imports and exports during the first two months of the current fiscal year, according to the Birgunj Customs Office.

Goods worth Rs 146 billion entered Nepal through Birgunj between mid-July and mid-September, marking a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last fiscal year. In the first two months of 2023/24, imports through the checkpoint had totaled Rs 122 billion.

Customs Chief Administrator Bishnu Prasad Gyawali said imports rose by Rs 243.2 billion year-on-year. “Not only imports, but revenue collection has also increased,” he added.

Exports through Birgunj also showed remarkable growth. Goods worth Rs 17.03 billion were exported during the review period, compared to Rs 6.05 billion in the same period last year, an increase of nearly Rs 11 billion.
