Country’s political and social situation deteriorating: Dr. Koirala

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) leader Dr. Shekhar Koirala has expressed concern over the worsening political and social climate in the country, warning that the situation is deteriorating day by day.

Speaking at a program in Kathmandu on Friday, Koirala emphasized that the responsibility for reversing this decline lies not only with politicians but also with schools and civil servants.

“Our political and social environment is collapsing. It is the duty of schools, political leaders, and government employees to help improve it,” he said, calling for collective effort and a shift in mindset. “We must ask ourselves: how can we move the country forward together?”

Stressing the importance of education in a democracy, Koirala said that meaningful reform cannot be achieved through token grants. “Education is the foundation of a democratic society. An educated woman uplifts an entire family, and an educated society creates a civilized nation,” he added.

Koirala acknowledged widespread shortcomings, saying mistakes had been made by lawmakers, those in government, and even the media. He urged greater focus on strengthening public schools as a means to national progress.

“We’ve all made mistakes—those drafting laws, those in government, even my friends in journalism,” he said. “If we seriously promote and invest in public education, we can achieve real progress.”

He also called on the government to prioritize improvements in community schools across the country, noting that education reform is essential to stabilizing both the political and social fabric of the nation.
