Nepal’s total government debt rises to Rs 2,654 billion



KATHMANDU: The Public Debt Management Office stated that the government’s total outstanding debt stands at Rs 2,654 billion. At the start of the fiscal year, public debt was Rs 2,434.9 billion, with an additional Rs 220.58 billion added by the end of May.

As of the end of May, total public debt accounted for 43.47 percent of Nepal’s gross domestic product (GDP). Of this, foreign debt constitutes 52.0 percent, while domestic debt makes up 47.94 percent.

Data as of mid-June shows internal debt at Rs 1,272.53 billion and external debt at Rs 1,382.12 billion. The government set a public debt mobilization target of Rs 547 billion for the fiscal year. By mid-June, Rs 414 billion had been raised, reaching 75.72 percent of the annual target.

For debt servicing, the government spent Rs 329.6 billion on principal and interest payments over the last 11 months.
