Pro-monarchy movement won’t be tolerated forever: Govt

KATHMANDU: Minister for Communications, Information and Technology and government spokesperson Prithvi Subba Gurung has cautioned that allowing pro-monarchy rallies should not be mistaken for weakness, stating that the government has so far shown restraint by allowing such gatherings.

“We have allowed those who oppose the constitution, reject democratic values, and aim to dismantle the current system to organize events and express their views,” Gurung said.

“But this shouldn’t be seen as cowardice or fear. We’ve done so out of democratic tolerance—not because we’re intimidated.”

Speaking at a program on Thursday to publicize decisions made by the Council of Ministers, Gurung warned that this level of leniency cannot continue indefinitely.

“If such anti-constitutional, anti-democratic, and anti-system activities persist, the government cannot tolerate them forever,” he stated.

He emphasized that the government holds constitutional authority to prohibit monarchist programs if necessary.

“The government does not remain passive—there will be a considered response,” Gurung asserted.

“They’ve announced protests, and we haven’t stopped them so far. But the government has both the constitutional and legal mandate to impose restrictions when required.”

Royalist groups have declared a fresh wave of protests starting from Jestha 15 (May 29), demanding the restoration of the monarchy.
