Dr. Baburam’s secretariat hits back at Prachanda

KATHMANDU: Rekhi Gurung, personal aide to former Prime Minister and Nepal Samajwadi Party (Naya Shakti) Chair Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, has strongly responded to Maoist Center Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ after he harshly criticized Bhattarai during a press conference held earlier in Rukum East.

At the event, Prachanda dismissed any prospect of future political cooperation with Bhattarai and referred to him as a “national laughingstock.”

Prachanda went on to say, “He’s known as the most unintelligent doctor. Even the reactionary elements he has aligned with have lost faith in him.”

In a swift and pointed response posted on social media, Gurung ridiculed Prachanda’s statement and persona, calling both “two great political jokes.”

“To claim that Baburam lacks intelligence and that Prachanda represents genuine communism—those are the two biggest political jokes of our time,” Gurung remarked.

Gurung reminded the public that Prachanda likely wouldn’t have reached Parliament had Dr. Bhattarai not stepped aside from his Gorkha seat.

“I’ve met many people from Gorkha who say Baburam can be overly idealistic—but never unintelligent,” he added.

Gurung also criticized Prachanda for belittling Bhattarai while simultaneously benefiting from his work—especially referencing the Mid-Hill Highway, a flagship national development initiative conceptualized by Bhattarai.

“To mock Baburam while strolling along the Mid-Hill Highway is no different than laughing at your own legacy,” Gurung pointed out.

Drawing a deeper distinction between the two former comrades, Gurung emphasized: “If Prachanda is a tactician in politics, Baburam is an agent of ideological change. Individuals fade with time, but ideas endure—that’s the real difference between a person and an ideology.”

Gurung closed with a biting comment on the broader state of politics in the country:
“Nepali politics has turned into a comedy show. Thank you, comrade, for today’s entertainment.”
