UML to unveil National Volunteer Force today amid rising security concerns

KATHMANDU: The CPN-UML is set to announce the formation of the National Volunteer Force (NVF) on Friday, positioning it as a mechanism to protect party policy, leadership stability, and respond to growing insecurity in society.

Thousands of UML-aligned youths are gathering at Maitighar Mandala this morning before marching to Baneshwor, after which a formal declaration event will be held at Karki Banquet in Babarmahal.

According to Bhanu Bhakta Dhakal, chief of the party’s mass-organization coordination mechanism, the force is being introduced in response to increasing insecurity, public fear and the psychological impact created by the incidents of September 8 and 9. Dhakal said the NVF aims to rebuild public confidence and establish a structured volunteer-based response system.

The NVF, he said, will support state agencies, assist the public during emergencies, help maintain peace, and mobilize during natural disasters for rescue and relief efforts.

Party Chair KP Sharma Oli is scheduled to announce the force at 11 a.m. UML leaders say the need for such a force became more apparent after the government recently withdrew security personnel assigned to Oli and several senior leaders, despite heightened political sensitivity.

The NVF will have a command structure comprising one commander and two assistant commanders. Dhakal added that provincial and district-level NVF units will be expanded immediately following today’s announcement.
