Gen-Z protest victims press PM Karki to take action against corruption

KATHMANDU: Victims of the Gen-Z movement have urged Prime Minister Sushila Karki to initiate strict action against corrupt and oppressive officials, warning that failure to do so could trigger another round of street protests.

The appeal came during a four-hour meeting at Baluwatar on Tuesday, which ran from 10:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The delegation, led by Rupin Khadka, included 18 individuals who were injured during the Gen-Z demonstrations. They pressed the government to act decisively against those responsible for corruption and violence.

Khadka told the prime minister, “Those against whom we protested, who is preventing their immediate arrest? Is it rules, the law, or the constitution? Wherever the obstacles are, let’s remove them and begin action.”

The victims said the government, formed after the revolution, should take revolutionary steps to uphold justice and accountability. They warned that inaction could provoke renewed mass mobilization.

During the discussion, Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal briefed the group on the progress of investigations into corruption and the suppression of the movement.

The victims also questioned the government’s focus on elections, asking, “Are you here just to shift the 2027 elections to 2026?”, a reference to perceived delays and inefficiencies in addressing their concerns.
