Gen-Z movement: Three-member inquiry commission formed under Gauri Bahadur Karki’s leadership

The government has formed a three-member high-level judicial inquiry commission to investigate the suppression and destruction that occurred during the Gen-Z movement. The commission will be led by former Special Court Chair and retired High Court judge Gauri Bahadur Karki.

Government removes Hitendra Shakya from NEA, Manoj Silwal appointed new Managing Director

The government has removed Hitendra Dev Shakya from his position as Managing Director of the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA). Shakya has been transferred to a senior-level position at the Water and Energy Commission. Former Deputy Executive Director Manoj Silwal has been appointed as the new Executive Director of NEA.

Injured Gen-Z protesters stage sit-in at Singha Durbar, accuse Sudhan Gurung of hijacking movement

Injured participants of the Gen-Z movement have begun surrounding Singha Durbar almost daily. After staging a sit-in at the southern gate on Friday, the protesters continued their demonstrations and chants on Sunday as well. Unable to enter through the south gate, the group held their sit-in outside. Many arrived carrying medical reports or walking with crutches, still recovering from injuries sustained during the September 8-9 protests.

Finance Ministry reshuffles responsibilities of three joint secretaries

Finance Minister Rameshwar Khanal has reassigned the responsibilities of three joint secretaries at the Ministry of Finance. Minister Khanal appointed Mahesh Acharya as head of the Financial Sector Management and Institution Coordination Division, replacing Sewantak Pokharel, who has been moved to lead the Fiscal Federalism Coordination Division.

Impact of Gen-Z movement: UAE visa suspension affects thousands of Nepalis

Following the Gen-Z movement, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a major labor destination for Nepalis, has informally halted visa approval processes. The suspension has left thousands of Nepalis seeking visit and work visas unable to proceed. According to former president of the Nepal Association of Foreign Employment Agencies, Rajendra Bhandari, the UAE stopped approving visas for Nepalis after the movement. He noted that although companies in the UAE continue to demand Nepali workers, immigration authorities are no longer approving visas, stalling applications in recent days.

Former Supreme Court Justice Anil Kumar Sinha to become Law Minister

Former Supreme Court Justice Anil Kumar Sinha has been finalized as the Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki has decided to entrust him with the ministry, which was previously overseen by Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal. Sinha was appointed as a Justice of the Supreme Court on 17 Shrawan 2073 B.S and retired on 14 Kartik 2080 B.S after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 65.

Dr. Sangeeta Kaushal Mishra set to become Health Minister

Dr. Sangeeta Kaushal Mishra has been finalized as the new Minister for Health, according to Gen-Z leader Anil Baniya, close to Prime Minister Sushila Karki. Baniya confirmed that Mahabir Pun has been selected as the Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, while Jagdish Kharel has been finalized for the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

NEPSE rebounds after major fall

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) rebounded strongly on Sunday, gaining 111.70 points, following a sharp fall of 160.33 points last Thursday. With a total transaction of Rs 9.17 billion, NEPSE’s market capitalization increased by 4.44 percent for the day.

PSC submits annual report to President

The Public Service Commission (PSC) submitted its annual report to President Ram Chandra Paudel on Sunday. PSC Chair Madhav Prasad Regmi presented the report for the fiscal year 2024/25 in line with the Constitution of Nepal. The handover took place during a ceremony held at the Office of the President in Sheetal Niwas.

Prachanda proposes special general convention in December

Maoist Centre Chair Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has proposed holding the party’s special general convention in December and dissolving all party committees from the central to local level. In the party office bearers’ meeting held on Sunday, Prachanda said the current political context demands a special convention to elect a new leadership.

Prithvi Highway expected to reopen by evening

Authorities are working to reopen the Prithvi Highway by this evening after it was blocked for over 40 hours due to landslides along the Muglin-Narayanghat section. With thousands of passengers stranded during the Dashain travel rush, the Department of Roads has expedited efforts to clear debris and restore traffic flow.

Baglung–Sigana–Bareng road reopens after weeklong closure

The Baglung–Sigana–Bareng–Shantipur road, which had been closed since September 14 due to a massive landslide, has reopened after seven days, restoring travel access for local residents and commuters. A large landslide from above the road in Sigana, Baglung Municipality-8, had buried a cowshed and severely damaged a section of the road, displacing one family. The presence of heavy rocks made the clearance process especially difficult, delaying the reopening.

Energy Minister’s decision on dues will be implemented through board meeting: Hitendra Dev

Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Hitendra Dev Shakya has said that the decision made by Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Kulman Ghising regarding the collection of outstanding dues on dedicated and trunk lines will be implemented through a board meeting of the Authority. Speaking to journalists on Sunday, Shakya said Minister Ghising’s decision, taken immediately after assuming office, will be taken forward by the NEA board.

Inmate who escaped from Nakkhu Prison kills wife after reaching home

An inmate who escaped from Nakkhu Prison in Lalitpur on September 9 has killed his wife upon returning home on Sunday. The prisoner had fled during the Gen-Z protests, which also saw Rastriya Swatantra Party chair Rabi Lamichhane released following the cooperative fraud controversy.

Narayangadh-Muglin road reopens one-way after Twin Khola landslide cleared

The Narayangadh–Muglin road section in Chitwan, which had been blocked by a landslide near Twin Khola, has been partially reopened. According to the Bharatpur Road Division Office, clearance work was completed on Sunday afternoon, allowing one-way traffic along the route.

Ministries demand return of items looted during Gen-Z protests

The Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation has called for the immediate return of items stolen during the Gen-Z demonstrations that took place on September 8 and 9. According to the Ministry, its premises were vandalized during the protests, with both two-wheeled and four-wheeled vehicles set on fire. In addition to the arson, various office equipment and electronic devices were looted.

20 injured in bus accident in Machhapokhari, Kathmandu

At least 20 people were injured in a bus accident near Machhapokhari, Kathmandu, on Sunday morning. The bus (Ba 5 Kha 50), which was en route from Tarakeshwor to Machhapokhari, overturned on the main road at Ukalo Chowk along the Machhapokhari Bypass while trying to give way to a motorcycle, according to eyewitnesses.

Gold price rises by Rs 1,100 per tola today

The price of gold in the domestic market has increased by Rs 1,100 per tola, according to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Federation. As of today, gold is being traded at Rs 217,100 per tola, up from Rs 216,000 per tola last Friday. Meanwhile, the price of silver stands at Rs 2,620 per tola, the Federation added. In the international market, gold is currently trading at around USD 3,685 per ounce.

SEBON reverts to previous closing price method, scraps 15-minute average rule

The Securities Board of Nepal (SEBON) has decided to abolish the 15-minute average price calculation method following strong backlash from investors. During a meeting, the board resolved to revert to the previous system—using the last traded price as the official closing price—effective from Sunday.

Six leaders of the Nepali Congress (NC), widely seen as loyal to party President Sher Bahadur Deuba, have resumed internal discussions amid growing calls for leadership change. The meeting comes as part of India’s continued diplomatic engagement following Nepal’s recent political transition. Ambassador Srivastava arrived at Singha Durbar early in the morning to meet Minister Ghising, who holds a key portfolio in the interim government formed in the aftermath of the Gen-Z protests.

Won’t compromise on good governance: Energy Minister Ghising

Minister for Energy, Physical Planning, and Urban Development Kulman Ghising has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to upholding good governance, stating that there will be no compromise on transparency and accountability. Speaking during a discussion with the leadership of the Federation of Nepal Construction Entrepreneurs at Singha Durbar on Sunday, Minister Ghising emphasized that the ongoing nationwide demand for change, sparked by the Gen-G movement, must be met with firm action.

President Paudel certifies Citizenship Amendment Bill

President Ram Chandra Paudel has certified the bill to amend the Nepal Citizenship Act, 2063. According to a statement issued by Pradeep Kumar Koirala, spokesperson for the Office of the President, the bill was certified in line with the provisions of the Constitution of Nepal, after being endorsed by both houses of the Federal Parliament.
