NWA to hold fourth general convention after nine years

KATHMANDU: The Nepal Women Association (NWA), the women’s wing of the Nepali Congress (NC), is set to organize its long-awaited fourth General Convention in mid-December, nearly a decade after its last assembly.

According to NWA Chairperson Usha Raut, the three-day convention will begin on December 15. The schedule for the provincial conventions has also been finalized, with events slated for December 7 as part of the lead-up to the national gathering.

A steering committee led by NC Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat has been formed to facilitate the smooth conduct of the convention. The committee, in coordination with the Association, also announced the full timeline for the upcoming event.

Raut, who was nominated to the post in December 2022 following the appointment of former president Uma Regmi as a federal minister, said the fourth convention had faced repeated delays due to various organizational and political hurdles.

“The calendar is now fixed, and we are moving ahead with full preparation,” Raut said.

The third General Convention, held nine years ago in Kathmandu, had elected Regmi as the president. With the upcoming convention, the NWA is expected to rejuvenate its structure and set a new strategic direction for women’s participation within the party and national politics.

Founded on August 8, 1947, the Nepal Women Association played a pivotal role in the anti-Rana movement and was led by prominent figures such as Mangala Devi Singh.

The organization has held three general conventions to date: the first in Biratnagar in 2001, the second in Kathmandu in 2007, and the third again in Kathmandu in 2015.
