Seven of 10 blocked roads reopen as monsoon hits highways

KATHMANDU: Following two days of continuous heavy rainfall, seven of the ten roads that had been blocked by landslides and floods across the country have been reopened, according to Nepal Police.

Deputy Inspector General of Police and spokesperson Binod Ghimire informed that efforts to clear and restore road access are ongoing. However, three major routes remain blocked, including the Dumkibas section of the Butwal-Narayangadh road.

In Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta East), the diversion over the Binayi River was washed away, and vehicular movement is still suspended. On Thursday, a passenger bus was nearly swept away at the same location before a successful rescue operation was conducted.

The Ghorahi–Rukum Shahid Marg has been obstructed due to a landslide at Jungdanda in Triveni Rural Municipality-7 of Rolpa. Similarly, the Siddhartha Highway remains closed at Surung in Tansen Municipality-3, Palpa, where landslides have blocked the road near a tunnel. Ghimire said clearing operations are underway at these sites.

Meanwhile, roads in several other locations have been reopened after debris removal. This includes the Kanti Lokpath in Bagmati Rural Municipality of Lalitpur, roads in Sangurigadhi of Dhankuta, Kaligandaki Corridor in Bulingtar of Nawalparasi (East), and the Beni–Jomsom route in Myagdi. The Kaligandaki Corridor in Gulmi has also resumed operation.

Partial operation has also been restored on the Jumla–Mugu road and the Bheri Corridor in Dolpa. Police say they are working to fully restore two-way traffic in these areas.

With monsoon conditions now affecting most parts of the country since Friday, police have urged the public to remain alert as the risk of landslides and flooding remains high.
