Nawaraj Subedi calls on RSP to join hands and push for Hindu state and constitutional monarchy

KATHMANDU: Nawaraj Subedi, the coordinator of the United People’s Movement Committee, has formally proposed an alliance with Rabi Lamichhane’s Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) to restore a constitutional monarchy and a Hindu state in Nepal.

In a letter addressed to the RSP, Subedi called for cooperation to reinstate a constitutional monarchy, a Sanatan Hindu kingdom, and a multiparty democratic system.

He believes this is a historic necessity to replace the current political order, which, according to him, has failed to deliver good governance, prosperity, and national identity to the Nepali people.

The proposal comes after the pro-monarchy movement, led by Subedi’s alliance, lost momentum following a violent protest at Tinkune, Kathmandu, on March 28. Subedi now aims to revive the campaign through a nationwide people’s movement, enlisting support from parties like RSP.

In the letter, Subedi also expressed concern over the erosion of Nepal’s traditional religious and cultural identity. He claimed that the current political system has endangered the country’s Sanatan values, religion, and indigenous beliefs.

Subedi’s proposal gains further context from the recent legal troubles of RSP Chair Rabi Lamichhane, who is currently in judicial custody at Bhairahawa prison following an order from the Butwal bench of the High Court Tulsipur in connection with a cooperative fraud case.

Referring to Lamichhane’s ongoing legal battle, Subedi noted that even the RSP leader has questioned the fairness of justice under the existing system.

He argued that major constitutional and judicial bodies have become deeply politicized and partisan, which aligns with RSP’s own discontent with the current system.

“I believe we can develop a shared understanding that changing the current system is the historical necessity of today,” Subedi wrote. “Let us unite to end extreme politicization and disorder, and restore national identity, justice, religion, and democracy. Let us reinstate the constitutional monarchy, Hindu nationhood, and multiparty democracy.”
