Nepal’s imports near Rs 1.5 trillion in 10 months; exports up by over 72%

KATHMANDU: Nepal imported goods worth nearly Rs 1.5 trillion in the first ten months of the current fiscal year, according to data released on Wednesday by the Department of Customs.

From mid-July 2024 to mid-May 2025, the country imported goods totaling Rs 1.474 trillion. This figure represents a 13.11 percent increase compared to the same period last fiscal year, when imports had reached Rs 1.303 trillion.

Meanwhile, exports have also seen a significant rise. During the review period, Nepal exported goods worth Rs 217.91 billion, which is a remarkable 72.71 percent increase compared to the Rs 126.17 billion recorded during the same period last fiscal year.

As a result, Nepal’s overall foreign trade during the first ten months of the fiscal year rose by 18 percent year-on-year, the department’s statistics show.

Among imported goods, diesel was the most expensive commodity. Nepal imported diesel worth Rs 102.39 billion during the period. The second-highest import was crude soybean oil, valued at Rs 81.89 billion, followed by petrol, which amounted to Rs 53.05 billion.

On the export side, soybean oil and its crude materials topped the list. Nepal exported soybean oil and its raw materials worth Rs 78.75 billion during the ten-month period. This was followed by exports of sunflower oil and related materials worth Rs 10.09 billion and carpets and textiles worth Rs 8.84 billion.

Despite the ongoing trade deficit, the sharp rise in exports marks a positive development for Nepal’s foreign trade outlook.
