BJP leader Jolly claims 81.2% of Nepalis support a Hindu nation

KATHMANDU: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Dr. Vijay Jolly has claimed that 81.2 percent of Nepal’s population is in favor of declaring the country a Hindu nation.

Speaking at a press conference in Kathmandu on Wednesday during his four-day visit, Jolly said that the Nepali people have a strong emotional connection to the idea of a Hindu state.

He mentioned meeting several top political figures, including President Ram Chandra Poudel, and expressed his willingness to support the sentiment for a Hindu nation.

“I believe Nepal’s leaders will also reconsider this issue in light of the people’s aspirations,” he said. On Nepal-India relations, Jolly emphasized historical ties and mutual support in times of crisis.

“India was the first to help Nepal during the earthquake. Similarly, Nepal stood with India in moments of difficulty,” he said, recalling Nepal’s solidarity after the terrorist attack in Pahalgam.

He noted the significance of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli calling Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi within 12 hours of the attack to express support.

He also spoke about the Ram temple in Ayodhya, India, saying its construction has contributed to local economic development. “Such development is possible in Nepal too, if cultural identity is preserved and respected,” he added.

Commenting on the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Jolly condemned the killing of 26 innocent people based on religion. Drawing a comparison with the U.S. operation to eliminate Osama bin Laden, he said,

“Just as the U.S. brought justice, Prime Minister Modi will ensure the terrorists behind Pahalgam are eliminated.”

Jolly is visiting Nepal at the invitation of the Institute for Public Policy and Partnership, and during his stay, he met with President Poudel and senior leaders from various political parties.
