BIRGUNJ: Maoist Center Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal has clarified that he is not currently seeking the position of Prime Minister and has no intention of doing so until 2027.
Speaking at a press conference in Birgunj, organized by Press Center Nepal, Dahal stated that his focus is on the ongoing efforts to promote economic development and good governance, rather than any aspirations for the top political office in the near future.
Dahal said it would not be appropriate for the Maoist Center to be accused of acting hypocritically, doing one thing while in government and another when out of government. He highlighted the party’s stance on fighting corruption while in office, pointing to initiatives like the enactment of laws favoring meter badge victims and addressing issues related to youth without citizenship as part of their commitment to governance.
Even though the Maoists are no longer in government, Dahal reiterated that the party continues to advocate for economic growth and good governance, staying true to their principles regardless of their position in government.
“I have consistently raised my voice for these issues, both while in government and out. The Maoist Center remains the same,” he said, adding that the previous Oli-led government had promoted corruption and unrest while discouraging those working towards positive change.
Dahal used the occasion to call for greater public support for critical national issues such as health, education, infrastructure, and good governance, all of which he believes are necessary for the development of Birgunj and the country as a whole.
On the issue of constitutional reforms, Dahal reiterated that the Constitution of Nepal should undergo review and amendments within the next few years, as originally planned during its formulation.
He mentioned that the Maoist Center’s Tarai-Madhes awareness campaign, which is focused on postal roads, is part of a broader initiative to create public awareness. A separate campaign focusing on mid-hill highways will follow.
The press conference was attended by civil society representatives, leaders of various organizations, and Maoist Center members.
Dahal also engaged with local residents of Birgunj during a morning walk earlier in the day, where he visited several locations, including Gandak Bahuari, Ghantaghar, Makalu Chowk, and Maisthan Chowk, interacting with locals and learning about their issues.
Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh welcomed Dahal and provided an overview of the city’s problems and needs.
