5th Law Asia International Human Rights conference to take place in Kathmandu



KATHMANDU: The Fifth ‘Law Asia International Human Rights Conference’ is set to be held in Kathmandu on coming February 15-17.

At a press conference today, the Nepal Bar Association (NBA) shared that the conference is scheduled to take place in the capital city with 300 plus participants from 36 countries including Law Asia members and non-members.

NBA Chair Gopal Krishna Ghimire expressed the belief that dialogue, collaboration and networking among the legal practitioners of Asia region would significantly contribute to the protection and promotion of human rights in Nepal.

The ‘Law Asia’ is a major regional association of professional associations of advocates, judges, experts and legal practitioners from more than 36 countries in the Asia Pacific region.

It advocates the concerns of the legal profession across the Asia Pacific region.

For over 50 years, the organization has been raising its voice for the promotion of inter-country exchange of legal knowledge and the rights of the legal professionals.

President Ramchandra Paudel is scheduled to inaugurate the conference while Chief Justice Prakash Man Singh Raut will be attending as the special guest.

Member-secretary of the conference, advocate Baburam Aryal shared that 14 thematic sessions will be held in the conference, including on human rights, environmental justice and rights of indigenous peoples and communities.

Thematic sessions will include human rights in the ‘digital’ era, the role of the judiciary in ensuring human rights in the Asia Pacific region, violence and discrimination against indigenous peoples, human rights in transitional justice, balancing environmental rights and development, the role of the National Human Rights Commission and national human rights organizations in the protection of human rights.
